Tree 03:54
Take a nail and a board and you find a tree. Hide up high, beyond my vision. I can hear when you sing. All the water hits me. When I look up all I see is light. According to others there is no tree, Just a board with a nail driven straight into me. So why do I stand out here in this field in the winter? It's a freezing rain and it's bright as the sun. Oh you sound so good, but you are no fun. Why do I get burned as I shiver around? Up inside your tree got me nice on the ground. Grab a hand let it go, turn the coffee cold. Lose a lot and gain a little. Lead me on with a carrot, you're oh so bold. I've been circling round this tree for years. According to others there is no tree, Just a board with a nail driven straight into me. So why do I stand here out in this field as I'm dying? It's a freezing rain and it's bright as the sun. Oh you sound so good, but you are no fun. Why do I get burned as I shiver around? Up inside your tree got me nice on the ground. You're a fancy thing, but you aint very real, Just a happy thought I was hoping to feel. How do I decide all the good from the bad? Days I never knew were the best I had.

Marionette 03:26
Paint is drying now. Ready for the show. I believe my joints are oiled. But I don't know. I wish I knew him. The man behind the wheel. I wish I knew why I think and why I feel. He knows just how to pull my strings and Make me dance the dance I always do, But I wish he'd see life through my eyes So he could hurt. I can see him here. Look him in the eye. And the blankest stare comes back across the sky. He knows just how to pull my strings and Make me dance the dance I always do, And I wish he'd see life through my eyes So he could hurt. Just a marionette All I will ever know. Then I hear the familiar shhh. It's time for you to go. He knows just how to pull my strings and Make me dance the dance I always do, And I wish he'd see life through my eyes So he could hurt.

Mr Johnson 03:57
Just a small incision above the right eye, That's all we ask of you Mr Johnson. Soon enough, you will forget why. I promise that it's true, Mr Johnson. We go and you lie. We grin while you cry. Hit the wall with your fist, make it broken. I can't believe it's you, Mr Johnson. Just give up, give in. That's your token. I know it makes you blue, Mr Johnson. We hide while you run. Then shoot with our gun. Saying ho ho ho, Merry Christmas Mr Johnson. This year's the year you met your end. We had you in from the start. And you know it's all your fault. So why won't you go quietly? In the end you did your job. Only wasn't what you thought it'd be. Lord you better do your work, because this soul doesn't think it's worth saving. This one doesn't even think he's alive. We hide, while you run. Then shoot, with our gun. We go and you lie. We sing while you die.

Wedding Song 02:58
It's amazing love, what more can I get? Sent here from up above the moment that we met. I felt a different thing I never felt before. I went and bought a ring brought it to your door. Might not always be easy, but you are the one I want. Every day I thank the lord for giving me you. Every time I see you smile I smile too. Take my hand and be with me the rest of our lives. I love you. A morning hello love, given to your lips. The hand to my glove, kiss your finger tips. I might not always be charming, but I will be always by your side. Every day I thank the lord for giving me you. Every time I see you smile I smile too. I'm so glad that I found you, the love of my life. I love you.

Kerosene and handkerchiefs make a child into a man. So much for the olden days, give me everything that you can. A funny flaw you have to run away and look me in the eye. A simple melody will fill your head and soon from your lips fly. Candy canes and cigarettes fill my pockets up to the brim. Soldiering an empty grave couldn't save your heart from my skin. So round and round we go the dinner table, socks, a hardwood floor. I'm catching up to you, so turn around and sing to me once more. Around and round we go a filling appetizer of a day. A blanket covers you and while the song goes out you run away.

Across the country, or across the yard. You never were too close, but always too far. Oh I waited, an eternity. I wasn't satisfied till you were next to me. And once I had your hand I never let it go. You might say we took so long, but I want you to know: You are worth a life-long wait. An easy pill to swallow. When you boarded all those planes, You took with you the red inside my veins. Seconds, minutes, hours, days. I counted them all when you were away. In a crowd of high and rise I walk you to the sea. Tell you one more time and ask if you will marry me. You are worth the life-long wait. An easy pill to swallow. And when we can't be touching, with you my heart will follow. Set the table say a prayer. In the morning you know I'll be there.

Walter 02:35
Walter is a very special man, Who thinks that he has everything he can. And when he sees the apple of his eye, He then can only turn and wonder why. How does he decide his fate? Laughing and smiling. Flipping Washington around, hoping for nothing. Chancing on his fire owl because he is hiding That he's empty on the inside. Walter never gives himself away. He stops to guarantee his heart will stay. She's beautiful but he will shy from her. And her never knowing why, he will prefer. How can he deny the day? Quickly and quiet. Walking eyes upon the ground, looking for nothing. Silent to his fire owl, because he is lacking He's empty on the inside. How will he comply to life? Buried not breathing. Sitting on his plastic chair, waiting for nothing. Sorry to his fire owl, for never trying Because he's empty on the inside. He's empty on the inside.

Pretty Girl 04:04
I'm a guy and you're a pretty girl. Can I hold your hand? Don't be scared, it's just a little bit of love. I'm a guy and you're a pretty girl. Can I take you out tonight? Don't be shy, it's just a little bit of love. You should know how much I'll be charming you And I won't stop till you are mine. I have waited so many lonely nights To have you by my side. I searched far and wide. I'm a guy and you're a pretty girl. Can I drive you home? Don't be scared, it's just a little bit of love. I'm a guy and you're a pretty girl. Can I have you meet my folks? Don't be shy, it's just a little bit of love. You should know how much I'll be charming you And I won't stop till you are mine. I have waited so many lonely nights To have you by my side. I'll take you for a ride. I'm a guy and you're a pretty girl. Can I have your hand? Don't be scared, it's just a little bit of love. I'm a guy and you're a pretty girl. Can I walk you down the aisle? Don't be shy, it's just a little bit of love. You should know how much I'll be charming you And I won't stop till you are mine. I have waited so many lonely nights to have you by my side. I'll take you for a ride. You should know how much I'll be loving you And I won't stop untill I die. I have waited so many lonely nights To have you by my side, as my lovely bride.

Hole 03:33
Sure as rain will fall on down, I know when you lie. When you told me how your plan was different. I fear before I fill this you-shaped hole I'll die. And maybe in a different world I might try. A feather in your yankee cap, I blow away. You cut me so much deeper this time. How much more did you bore this you-shaped hole I hide? A cavity that nothing seems to satisfy. The morning turns me down, a silent waking. And once again I know, I know. Before I fill this you-shaped hole I'll try. And if it takes me all my life I'll die trying.

Martyr 04:08
So, I forgot to mention The other day I saw a choir. They sung about the ocean And how the flames kept reaching higher. And every time I nod agreement, I promise you I don't know. Turn the water into fire, oh And it calls me out by name. Capturing a single death, oh Will make it gladly go away. I got my wooden boat out And cued a chuckle from the crowd An iron dock for launching, And called an idiot aloud. And every time i smile briefly, I promise you I don't know. Turn the water into fire, oh And it calls me out by name. Capturing a single death, oh Will make it go away. It's a trial run by fire, oh I'm a martyr in a game. And a sigh of simple breath Will tell me that it's all okay. I feel fine. Turn the water into fire, oh And it calls me out by name. Capturing a single death, oh Will make it gladly go away. It's a trial run by fire, oh I'm a martyr in a game. And a sigh of simple breath Will tell me that it's all okay.

Yesterday had come to take what we owed. No one knew it'd be him who left on the road. We don't live long. That's why I ask you. Goin down in a fury of bullet rain Seems the best for us, but what did he gain? We don't live long. That's why I ask you. I know there is no answer. I'll have to make the change. See you tomorrow at sunset. I know it will be strange. We never did it perfect. We never knew till now. Finally he forgives us and takes a final bow. We don't live long. That's why I ask you.

Storm 03:55
Breaking bottles pulling rope. Scared to stay, but scared to go. Red at dawn you warn me away. When you don't know you just don't know. I'll gladly sail into that storm to find the part of you that you don't seem to think is worth the venture. Let me find you in the waves. Waiting it out a silly thought. Who can say what tomorrow knows? Only thing I ask of you, is your head down to your toes. I'll gladly sail into that storm to catch the part of you that you don't seem to think is worth the battle. Let me pull you into my arms. I'll gladly stay inside that storm to know the part of you that you think I should be afraid of. I will never be afraid, my love.

Place 02:53
I have a place to wander in. My garden is a sea of thorns, but nary a single rose. I am bound to the sound and I fear I will drown in the sound.

about

The Man Behind the Wheel explores the inside of a person, learning how inspirations and desires interact with fears and pains. Love songs and hate songs, some are stories and some are personal, but they all follow the same suit of melody based music that Jona Lyons has been known for. With this album, Lyons gives the listener a good view to the inside. The listener will notice the repeated use of visual of earthly elements, and all but one of the songs are first person.
